Pu’er is home to 25 ethnic minority groups, each with its own language, clothing, music, festivals and traditions.
For many families, life still follows the rhythm of the mountains.
When spring arrives, tea farmers carry woven bamboo baskets and climb ancient tea trees, carefully picking only the youngest leaves by hand.
These skills have been passed from grandparents to parents, and then to children, for hundreds of years.
Tea is not only their livelihood.
It is part of their identity.
Ancient forests, not plantations
Unlike many modern tea farms, much of Pu’er’s famous tea comes from ancient trees growing naturally in mountain forests.
Some of these trees are hundreds of years old, while others are over a thousand years old.
The changing seasons, rich soil and mountain mist give every harvest its own unique character.
No two years taste exactly the same.
The tradition of hand-fired tea
Freshly picked leaves are still processed using traditional hand-firing techniques.
Tea makers continuously turn the leaves by hand inside a large hot wok.
This isn’t simply tradition.
It allows them to carefully control temperature and moisture, preserving the tea’s aroma, texture and natural sweetness.
Every movement comes from years of experience.
No machine can completely replace the touch of skilled hands.
